Which faction should I choose in AION 2?
AION 2 brings eight playable classes to its global launch on October 5, 2026, on PC through Steam and the NCSOFT PURPLE launcher. Each class is tied to one weapon type and one primary group role. That pairing is the most reliable thing you can plan around right now, because it is confirmed for the global build — unlike anything involving numbers.
What classes are in AION 2 at launch?
Eight classes ship with the global launch: Templar, Gladiator, Assassin, Ranger, Sorcerer, Spiritmaster, Cleric, and Chanter. Each pairs with one weapon type and one primary group role. The Korean and Taiwanese service also runs a ninth class, Brawler, but it has not been confirmed for the global launch roster.
| Class | Role | Weapon |
|---|---|---|
| Templar | Main tank | Longsword |
| Gladiator | Bruiser / off-tank | Greatsword |
| Assassin | Melee DPS | Dagger |
| Ranger | Ranged physical DPS | Bow |
| Sorcerer | Ranged magic DPS | Spellbook |
| Spiritmaster | Summoner / sustained magic DPS | Orb |
| Cleric | Primary healer | Mace |
| Chanter | Hybrid support | Staff |
Templar
Main tank, longsword. The Templar is the class a group builds around: it stands in front of a boss and holds attention while everyone else does their job. Pick it if you want to set the pace of a fight rather than chase the damage meter — the role rewards positioning and patience more than speed.
Gladiator
Bruiser and off-tank, greatsword. The Gladiator sits between the Templar and the pure damage classes: heavy enough to take a beating, aggressive enough to matter while it does. It suits players who want to be in the middle of the fight and who are happy to cover the tank when a pull goes wrong.
Assassin
Melee DPS, dagger. The Assassin is a close-range damage dealer, which in practice means the least room for error and the most benefit from good positioning. Choose it if you like fast melee, staying glued to a target, and being the player who has to move first when a mechanic lands.
Ranger
Ranged physical DPS, bow. The Ranger deals physical damage from distance, so it can keep attacking while it repositions. It fits players who want to contribute damage without standing inside the boss, and who prefer reading a fight from outside it rather than reacting at contact range.
Sorcerer
Ranged magic DPS, spellbook. The Sorcerer is the ranged magic damage class: casting from safety, with less margin when something closes the gap. Pick it if you enjoy building a rotation around cast times and being rewarded for keeping your distance.
Spiritmaster
Summoner and sustained magic DPS, orb. The Spiritmaster fights through a summoned companion as much as through its own casts, which suits players who like managing a second actor on the field. Naming note: the global service calls this class Spiritmaster, while English guides built from the Korean and Taiwanese client often call it Elementalist.
Cleric
Primary healer, mace. The Cleric is the role groups are built to protect: it keeps other players alive, which means reading a fight from the group’s perspective instead of your own. Play it if you want the clearest feedback on whether you did your job well.
Chanter
Hybrid support, staff. The Chanter supports rather than pure-heals — part group help, part personal contribution. It suits players who want to be useful in every group without carrying a healer’s full responsibility, and who like alternating between helping others and adding their own damage.
Which faction should you play — Elyos or Asmodians?
Either. AION 2 has two factions, the Elyos (Light) and the Asmodians (Dark), and all eight launch classes are available to both. Faction changes your starting region, your story framing, and the players you meet — it does not change your class, your weapon, or your role.
That point is worth repeating, because faction-locked classes are a common assumption in MMOs and it does not apply here. There is no Elyos-only or Asmodian-only class on the global launch roster, and every class can be played as either gender.
What faction does affect is population. On a fresh server, an unbalanced faction can mean a quieter economy, fewer groups at your level, and a different open-world experience. Server and faction are day-one decisions, so make them together: the server list and regions page tracks what NCSOFT has confirmed.
How should you choose a class when there is no global tier list?
Choose by the role you want to fill and the weapon you want to hold. Role and weapon are the only class facts confirmed for the global build; relative strength is not. A class you enjoy playing badly beats a class you resent playing well, especially in the first weeks.
| If you enjoy | Start with |
|---|---|
| Being the anchor a group builds around | Templar |
| Heavy melee with room to brawl | Gladiator |
| Fast, positional melee | Assassin |
| Physical damage from a distance | Ranger |
| Magic damage from a distance | Sorcerer |
| Managing a pet alongside your own casts | Spiritmaster |
| Keeping a group alive | Cleric |
| Helping a group without full healer duty | Chanter |
That ordering is deliberate. If you have played other MMOs, you already know which of those you find fun, and that preference transfers even though the numbers do not. Role is also the part of a class that Korean and Taiwanese footage describes most reliably, as the global vs KR/TW differences page explains.
Is there a global AION 2 tier list?
Not a credible one. The retail global build has never been playable, so nobody can measure class performance in it. Every global ranking published before October 5, 2026 is inferred from the Korean and Taiwanese service — a separate build with its own balance and ten months of extra patches.
That does not make those rankings worthless. It makes them hypotheses about a game nobody outside Asia has played, and they should be read that way: as a rough sense of what each class is for, not as a verdict on what to main.
The first honest comparisons will come from the global build itself — earliest during the Advance Access window that opens September 30, and properly in the weeks after launch, once players are comparing classes on the same patch. Until then, treat any page that ranks all eight classes with confidence as a page that is guessing.
What about the Brawler and the gauntlet?
Brawler is the ninth class on the Korean and Taiwanese service, added alongside Chapter 1, and it fights with a gauntlet. It has not been confirmed for the global launch roster, which is why the global count is eight. Treat any global Brawler guide as speculation.
This is the clearest example of how the version gap shows up in practice. KR/TW players have had a ninth class for months, so guides, videos, and tier lists that include Brawler are easy to find — and none of them tell you whether the global service gets the class at launch, later, or on a different schedule. NCSOFT has not said.
The practical rule: if a page lists nine classes for the global launch, it is describing the Korean and Taiwanese roster.
What should you settle before launch day?
Three things: your class, your faction and world, and whether you want the five-day Advance Access window. All three are day-one decisions. The global launch is October 5, 2026, with Founder’s Pack owners starting September 30 — the release date and launch time page has the schedule.
- Class: pick by role using the table above. No build decisions are needed yet, because no global skill values are confirmed.
- Faction and world: class options are identical on both sides, so decide on population and community. The server list and regions page tracks the confirmed world list.
- Early access: a Founder’s Pack is the only route into the September 30 window — see the Founder’s Pack comparison for the tiers.
