What item level do you need for Nightmare and the Abyss?
Clash Runes slot into the two rune slots at the bottom of your equipment window, and each one gives five combat stats plus 40 item level. You get your first runes by finishing four regional quests on your faction’s map — each rewards a bound Clash Rune Chest — and every rune after that comes from buying repeatable chests for 500 Phantasmal Fragments in the Nightmare Trade Shop. Enhance them to +1 and stop there: from +2 onward, a failed attempt destroys the rune.
That destruction rule is the whole reason this guide exists. Runes look like small gear, but they are the only equipable item in the global build where a bad upgrade click deletes the item itself — so the farm routes below matter less than knowing when to stop spending.

What are Clash Runes in AION 2?
A Clash Rune is a special-grade piece of equipment that occupies one of your two dedicated rune slots and adds combat stats on top of your regular gear. The slots appear in the Equipment window directly below the accessory slots, and a rune sitting in your inventory does nothing until it is equipped. The global client currently ships exactly one rune: the Clash Rune. Other runes — the wiki lists the Devotion Rune — are marked Korean version only.
| Stat at +0 | Value |
|---|---|
| PvE Damage Tolerance | +0.5% |
| PvE Damage Boost | +0.5% |
| Penetration | +100 |
| Combat Speed | +1% |
| Multi-Hit Chance | +1% |
Every source covering the global client agrees on those five values; one wiki lists the fourth line as Attack Speed rather than Combat Speed, but the number is the same. A base rune carries an item level of 40 and can be enhanced up to +10. Filling both slots is worth doing early: the two stats most players ignore — tolerance and multi-hit — are exactly the ones you cannot get from the quest rewards that fill the rest of your gear.
How do you get Clash Runes from regional quests?
Four regional quests per faction each award one account-bound Clash Rune Chest — Elyos quests are in Verteron, Asmodian quests in Altgard. Opening a chest gives you one Clash Rune plus enhancement scrolls (one guide counts nine scrolls per chest). These are one-time rewards, so completing a quest again does not produce a second chest, and the eight quests below are the entire early supply.
| Quest | Faction | Recommended level | Where to start |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cursed Blue Mineral | Elyos | 30 | Hiru, Wind Breeze Merchants — Aullaeu Village |
| Zumion’s Call: Part Two | Elyos | 37 | Seraphine — Western Altamia Highland |
| All Work and No Play | Elyos | 45 | Xiao, Thunder Lightning Merchants — Aullaeu Village |
| Kraka Pond Pests | Elyos | 45 | Rikke, Notos Legion — Southern Altamia Highland |
| The Future Within the Past | Asmodian | 30 | Harald, Relic Warden — Uruthumheim |
| Hugo Mercenaries: An Old Promise | Asmodian | 32 | Hadala — Dranactus |
| Fallout | Asmodian | 45 | Karumba, Daybreak Society — Southern Gribade Highland |
| Another Survivor | Asmodian | 45 | Hallina, Nornir — Nornir Assembly |
Two cautions before you chase the list. The recommended levels are suggestions, not unlock promises — story progress gates the later quests. One guide reports that you need to reach Episode 6 on the main quest chain before two of the latter quests appear, and it names the specific prerequisites for others: Cursed Blue Mineral follows Secrets Within Secrets, Hugo Mercenaries: An Old Promise follows Last of the Destruction Archons, and Kraka Pond Pests follows Draupnir. If a reward quest is missing, the earlier quest in that chain is missing too. Chest side rewards also vary between guides — they list Kina, Wisdom Stones and Daevanion Crystals alongside the chest, but disagree on the exact counts, so treat the chest as the guaranteed part and the rest as a bonus.
How do you farm more Clash Runes in Nightmare?
Nightmare is level-45 solo boss content that pays Phantasmal Fragments, and a Clash Rune Chest (Bound) costs exactly 500 fragments in the Trade Shop. That makes the Nightmare shop your repeatable replacement source once the eight quest chests are gone — one walkthrough reports no purchase limit on the chest, so broken runes are recoverable rather than account-bricking.
The loop works like this: each Nightmare boss has challenge levels, first clears pay a 500-fragment bonus on top of the normal drop, and attempts are limited — two per day with up to 14 banked, according to one guide’s breakdown of the global season. That budget matters more than any drop rate: your daily fragment income is capped by attempts, not by luck.
One point sources disagree on: the unlock. Two launch-week guides describe Nightmare as opening at item level 1,000, while a detailed walkthrough puts the unlock at level 45 with the first challenge — Gatekeeper Pinopi — merely suggesting around 1,000 item level. Both readings point at the same practical gate: you need to be at the level cap and near 1,000 item level before Nightmare is a real farm. The leveling guide covers the road to 45, and the gear progression guide covers the item level climb itself.
A second, smaller source of chests is the Season Shop, reported to stock Clash Rune Chests for Oath Coins. That stock is seasonal and separate from the repeatable Nightmare exchange, so check it before spending fragments you might need elsewhere.
How much item level do Clash Runes give you?
Each Clash Rune grants 40 item level once slotted — two base runes contribute 80 gear score, and both at +1 contribute 82. That sounds small until you see what those points unlock. Reaching a total item level of 1,000 is the requirement for stepping into the Abyss portal during the penultimate Episode 6 quest, and that quest gates two of the side quests that reward more rune chests.
So runes sit in a loop with the gate they help you pass: quest runes raise your item level, the higher item level opens the Abyss and the later rune quests, and those quests hand back more runes. This is why rune slots are worth filling before you chase marginal upgrades elsewhere — 80 item level from two empty-slot fills is among the cheapest score on the sheet. The Abyss guide covers what waits on the other side of that portal.
How do you enhance Clash Runes safely?
The +0 to +1 attempt is guaranteed, and every attempt from +2 up can delete the rune. Rune enhancement runs on its own system — a Clash Rune Enhance Scroll plus Kina and Enhance Stones — and the success rate falls fast:
| Target level | Success rate |
|---|---|
| +1 | 100% |
| +2 | 80% |
| +3 | 66% |
| +4 | 50% |
| +5 | 33% |
| +6 | 25% |
| +7 | 20% |
| +8 | 15% |
| +9 | 12% |
| +10 | 10% |
Unlike regular equipment, runes get no safe-enhancement treatment and no bad-luck protection. One guide prices the guaranteed step at 5,000 Kina, 200 Enhance Stones and one scroll — enough to plan both starter runes at +1 for 10,000 Kina and 400 stones. The scrolls themselves come out of the quest chests and from rune bundles, so the early supply is fixed until Nightmare chests restock it.
The safe pattern is the same in every source that covers the risk: get both equipped runes to +1 first, then enhance a third spare copy. If the spare breaks, your equipped pair keeps its bonuses; if it survives and reaches a higher level, swap it in and keep the displaced rune as the next gamble. Even the “safe” 80% at +2 means a one-in-five chance of losing the item — treat that as the price of the attempt, not as a rounding error. Enhancement improves the rune’s values as it climbs (guide coverage says tolerance improves gradually while other stats gain larger bonuses at higher levels), but no source publishes the per-level stat table, so the exact payoff at +7 is not documented.
What should you do first?
The order that wastes nothing:
- Clear your faction’s four rune quests as they appear along the regional quest line — each chest is a one-time rune plus scrolls.
- Equip both runes and take each to +1 — the only guaranteed enhancement, and 80 item level toward the 1,000 you need for the Abyss portal.
- Reach level 45 and push item level toward 1,000 to open Nightmare; this is where rune supply stops being finite.
- Farm Phantasmal Fragments and buy chests at 500 each — first clears of each challenge level pay a 500-fragment bonus, and two attempts a day cap the pace.
- Only enhance spares above +1, and never the pair you are wearing.
Daevanion Crystals ride along on several of these quest rewards, so the same trip feeds your boards as well — the Daevanion boards guide tracks that currency.
