FAQ

What is the Templar in AION 2?
The Templar is the main tank of the eight-class global launch roster. It fights with a longsword, absorbs damage at the front of a group, and holds enemy attention so the other classes can do their jobs. NCSOFT lists it as a launch class for October 5, 2026.
What weapon does the AION 2 Templar use?
A longsword. AION 2 ties each class to one weapon type rather than letting you swap between weapon sets, so the longsword is the whole weapon decision for a Templar.
Is the Templar a good class for beginners?
It is the most forgiving role to start with, because holding a position and absorbing pressure is simpler than timing a damage rotation. The difficulty moves to the endgame, where a tank has to read a fight and decide when the group commits.
Can Elyos and Asmodians both play a Templar?
Yes. All eight launch classes are open to both factions, and every class can be played as either gender. Faction changes your starting region, your story framing and your community, not your class options.
Does the Templar do enough damage to solo in AION 2?
Tanking classes trade personal output for durability by design, so expect a Templar to clear solo content more slowly than a dedicated damage class while surviving situations that would kill one. Any claim about how much slower needs the live global build to measure.
Is the Templar the best class in AION 2?
There is no verified answer before October 5, 2026. No global tier list exists because the retail global build has never been playable, and rankings measured on the Korean and Taiwanese service describe a different build.
What should I test during the AION 2 Launch Scale Test?
Class feel, not numbers. The September 17 and 18 test wiped all progress at the end, so the sensible use of six hours a day was deciding whether holding a front line is fun for you, rather than chasing gear that would be deleted.

The Templar is the class a group is built around in AION 2: a longsword main tank that stands in front, absorbs the damage nobody else can, and controls when a fight starts. It is confirmed for the global launch roster on October 5, 2026. This page separates what NCSOFT has actually confirmed from what Korean and Taiwanese play suggests, and it publishes no damage numbers, because none can be measured yet.

What is the AION 2 Templar?

The Templar is AION 2’s main tank. It fights with a longsword, holds the front line, absorbs the pressure a group cannot avoid, and keeps enemy attention on itself so the other classes can work. NCSOFT lists it among the eight classes shipping with the global launch on October 5, 2026.

Templar Detail
Role Main tank
Weapon Longsword
Primary stat direction Mitigation and survivability first, threat and damage second
Difficulty Low to moderate to start, demanding at endgame
Best for Players who want to lead the pull, set the pace, and survive other people’s mistakes

The stat direction is a qualitative read of what a tank is for, not a measured priority, and the classes overview covers how the Templar sits against the other seven classes.

How does the AION 2 Templar play?

Slowly and deliberately, on purpose. A Templar opens a fight, takes the first hits, and keeps a boss or a pack pointed at itself while everyone else works. You spend more time holding ground, watching where the target is facing, and timing defensive tools than chasing a damage meter.

What the official global material confirms

Role, weapon, faction access and roster membership are confirmed: NCSOFT presents the Templar as the game’s tank, which tells you what a group will ask you to do — take the pull, keep attention, and stay alive while others commit. Role is also the piece of class design that carries most reliably across services, as the global vs KR/TW differences page explains.

What Korean and Taiwanese play suggests — not confirmed for global

The Korean and Taiwanese service has run since November 19, 2025, and its Templar reads the same way: frontal, stand-your-ground mitigation paired with crowd control and threat generation. Treat every part of that as an observation about a different build.

  • Frontline mitigation is the identity. The class is built to eat damage rather than avoid it.
  • Crowd control and attention-holding are core duties. A Templar gathers and pins enemies, it does not merely survive them.
  • Decision-making is the difficulty, not rotation complexity. When to commit, where to stand, what to interrupt.

A greatsword class that wants to be hit is a different job with the same address; the Gladiator guide covers that alternative. Neither page claims to know which one hits harder, because nobody has played the global build.

What are the Templar’s strengths and weaknesses?

The trade is group demand against personal output. A Templar is the class a group cannot easily start without and the class that will never top a damage chart, and both halves of that sentence are the same design decision seen from opposite sides.

Strengths Weaknesses
Tank slots are scarce, so a competent Templar is always wanted Personal damage is not the point, and it shows in solo play
Recoverable mistakes: durability forgives bad positioning once Group outcomes depend on you, and so does the blame
Clear job description from the first pull to the last Tanking is reactive — you respond to the fight more than you drive it
Sets the pace of a pull instead of reacting to someone else’s Needs the group to respect your pull, which is a social skill, not a stat
Easiest role to start, hardest to play perfectly at endgame No verified numbers exist to judge any of the above

The difficulty label is our reading of class mechanics, not a measurement — the same standard the tier list page uses for every class it refuses to rank.

Can Elyos and Asmodians both play a Templar?

Yes, both. AION 2 has two factions, the Elyos (Light) and the Asmodians (Dark), and all eight launch classes are available on either side. Every class can also be played as either gender, and the global build includes a wardrobe and character customization system.

Faction is therefore not a class decision. It changes your starting region, the story framing around you, and the players you will group with — population, economy, and how busy your level range feels. Because faction and world are permanent day-one choices, it is worth settling them before launch, as covered in the release date and launch time guide.

The customization point came late and is worth knowing: NCSOFT added the Wardrobe and Character Customization systems to the Launch Scale Test after the test was first announced.

Is there a tier placement for the AION 2 Templar?

No. There is no verified global tier placement for the Templar, or for any other class, before October 5, 2026. The retail global build has never been playable, so there is nothing to measure, and the Korean and Taiwanese service is a separate build with its own balance.

That absence is not modesty, it is arithmetic. A ranking is a measurement, and measurements need a population playing the same build on the same patch. Everything published as a global AION 2 tier list today was inferred from footage of a service that global players will not be playing.

Two honest substitutes exist, and they are more useful than a fabricated S-tier:

  • Role scarcity. Tank is the role groups form around and the one players most often avoid, so a Templar finds a group faster than a fifth damage dealer — and role scarcity survives every balance patch.
  • Mechanical difficulty. The Templar has the most forgiving entry point of the eight classes; the demand arrives later, in endgame content where the tank reads the fight and calls the commit.

The class tier list explains why every ranking you can find right now is a hypothesis. The only pre-launch chance to feel the class was the Launch Scale Test on September 17 and 18, 2026.

What changes on this page after October 5?

Everything below the confirmed layer. Once the global build is live this page gains a real leveling and endgame section, a stat priority checked against the live client, and a tier placement with its method stated — test date, build, and how many runs each claim came from.

When What gets added
From September 30, 2026 (Advance Access) First-hand impressions of how the Templar plays on the global client — feel, pacing, solo speed, still without balance claims
From October 5, 2026 (launch) Confirmed skill list, stat priorities, threat and mitigation notes, and leveling route
Two to four weeks after launch A tier placement, published only with its sample size and test date attached

This page will not be filled in with speculation to look finished, and it will not borrow Korean and Taiwanese values as if they transferred.

Sources and verification

Everything above was checked against the sources below on September 22, 2026. Role, weapon and faction rules come from NCSOFT global material, Korean and Taiwanese observations are labelled where they appear, and no damage, stat or ranking figure appears on this page at all.

  • NCSOFT global site, aion2.plaync.com — global launch date and the confirmed eight-class launch roster
  • NCSOFT Steam announcements for AppID 3393110 and the playtest app 4972320 — Launch Scale Test dates, level cap of 37, disabled systems, and the Wardrobe and Character Customization additions
  • NCSOFT Korean and Taiwanese service material — November 19, 2025 launch, used only as labelled context
  • Role and weapon pairings mirror the confirmed global launch roster

Evidence level: Official / Global for the Templar’s role, longsword weapon, launch roster membership, and faction and gender access. Global-adjacent for the difficulty read, which is derived from class mechanics rather than measured. Korean and Taiwanese for the playstyle notes, clearly marked and not confirmed for the global service. No numeric claim is made anywhere on this page.
