AION 2 Controller Support and PC Controls
AION 2 is playable with a controller on PC, but NCSOFT has not confirmed full controller support. What the official FAQ, the developers and Steam actually say.
FAQ
Does AION 2 support a controller on PC?
Is there full controller support at AION 2 launch?
Which controllers work with AION 2 on PC?
Can I play AION 2 on Steam Deck?
Does AION 2 have native gamepad mapping?
Will AION 2 come to consoles?
AION 2 launches globally on October 5, 2026 as a Windows PC game through Steam and the PURPLE launcher, and the controller question is one of the few launch questions NCSOFT has answered in writing. The answer has two halves. A controller works. The word “full” has not been earned — NCSOFT says full controller support is still being evaluated.
Does AION 2 support a controller on PC?
Yes, and it is on the record. The official AION 2 pre-release FAQ, published July 8, 2026 and updated August 25, 2026, answers the question directly: “While AION 2 is playable with a controller, we are still evaluating if full controller support is within our scope for launch.”
Two claims sit inside that sentence, and they are not equally strong. “Playable with a controller” is a confirmation you can plan around. “Still evaluating … full controller support” is a refusal to promise anything beyond playable. At Gamescom 2026 the staff side of the message was a little firmer: in a Wccftech interview published September 7, 2026, NC’s Merv Lee Kwai — identified in coverage of the interview as Executive Publishing Producer — replied, “Absolutely, controllers are supported.”
That is the state of the global build. The Korean and Taiwanese service is a PC-and-mobile release that has run since November 2025 (KR/TW reference), and its client has accepted controller input for months. That makes KR/TW footage a rough preview rather than a guarantee, which is the same trap that catches almost every AION 2 build guide; the global versus KR/TW page explains why the two builds should not be treated as one.
Does AION 2 have native gamepad mapping?
“Native mapping” means the game itself turns pad input into actions, rather than leaning on a translation layer that fakes keyboard and mouse. The evidence points to native handling, but NCSOFT has published no mapping chart for the global build, so it is worth separating the confirmed from the community knowledge.
| Control layer | What is known for the global build | Where it comes from |
|---|---|---|
| Movement, camera and combat skills | Controller play is confirmed | NCSOFT pre-release FAQ; Gamescom interview |
| In-game gamepad bindings | Documented by KR/TW players, not published by NC for global | KR/TW reference, community-reported |
| Menus, inventory and text entry | Not promised — full support still under evaluation | NCSOFT pre-release FAQ |
| A published button map for the global client | Not published | — |
| Steam controller category on the store page | None listed on AppID 3393110 as of September 24, 2026 | Steam store page |
The third row is the one to plan around, because it is where “playable” and “fully supported” come apart. If NC had finished the full support pass, the FAQ would say so; it says the opposite. A game can be perfectly comfortable in combat on a pad while still expecting a mouse for inventory sorting, text entry or a settings menu, and NC has not told us which side of that line any screen falls on. Treat a controller as a good way to fight and a keyboard as something to keep within reach until the live build proves otherwise.
Which controllers and remapping are reported?
| Detail | What is reported | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Controller button remapping | Full remapping of pad buttons, with multiple saved profiles | Reported by secondary coverage; unconfirmed for global |
| Analogue stick tuning | Adjustable sensitivity and configurable dead zones | Reported; unconfirmed for global |
| Controller layouts | PlayStation and Xbox layouts said to work natively | Reported; unconfirmed for global |
| Third-party pads | No supported-controller list from NCSOFT for the global build | Unconfirmed |
| Steam Input | Valve’s translation layer can map a pad the game does not accept | General Steam feature, not game-specific |
The first three rows come from AION2KINA’s accessibility write-up, a secondary guide that also supplies the UI-scaling list below. None of it is repeated in NCSOFT’s global FAQ or on the Steam store page, so treat the rows as reported rather than confirmed. The last row is the safe fallback: if the client ignores your pad, Steam Input can usually translate it into input the game already understands — the same workaround the setup steps below use.
How do you set up a controller?
There is no official setup guide, so this is a practical order of operations rather than an NC procedure. Menu names and behaviour can change between the test client and launch, and the steps below lean on community practice where NCSOFT has published nothing.
- Connect the pad before launching the client. Use wired USB or Bluetooth, and confirm Windows actually sees it first — the Xbox Accessories app for Xbox pads, or the system Game Controllers panel for anything else. A pad Windows does not recognise will not be seen by the game either.
- Let the game try first. Launch through Steam or PURPLE and test whether AION 2 picks up the controller on its own. If the game’s native mapping works, you want that rather than a layer that reinterprets it.
- If nothing registers, enable Steam Input. Steam’s controller settings can translate a pad into input the game accepts. Community guides written against the KR/TW client lean on this, which is itself a sign that the game’s own mapping is not exhaustive.
- If you get doubled or ghost inputs, turn Steam Input off. Two translators acting on the same stick is the usual cause. The fix is to let exactly one of the two handle the pad.
- Keep keyboard and mouse nearby. Until NC publishes which screens accept a pad, assume some do not, and save yourself a fight with the inventory on launch night.
Steps three and four are the workaround path, and they are community practice rather than official instruction. If you only want to press buttons and hit things, step two may be all you need.
What are the keyboard and mouse defaults?
Keyboard and mouse remain the baseline input for AION 2’s global release. The game is PC-first by platform, its interface is dense, and the mouse is still the fastest way around menus even if the pad handles combat. That is why “playable with a controller” and “designed around a controller” are different statements.
NCSOFT has not published a keybind list, so the defaults are only visible in the client. One test-build observation is worth keeping in mind: SPACE4GAMES, reviewing the Launch Scale Test, found a settings menu with eight tabs of options but no mouse sensitivity slider and no frame-rate limiter beyond V-Sync. That is a 12-hour test observation rather than a launch promise, and it says more about how young the settings screen was than about the final build. The PC system requirements cover what the client needs from the machine itself, and the gameplay overview covers what the combat actually asks of your hands.
One secondary settings guide, Overgear’s AION 2 best-settings write-up, describes two targeting schemes: an AION 2 Mode for action combat and direct camera control, and an AION 1 Mode for cursor targeting and standard MMO controls. That is reported rather than published by NCSOFT, and it is unconfirmed for the global build, but it is a useful signal that the PC client is built to support both action-style and cursor-style input.
What UI scaling and accessibility options are reported?
| Reported option | What it is said to do | Status |
|---|---|---|
| UI scaling | Resize the minimap, action bars, chat and tooltips separately | Reported; unconfirmed for global |
| Colourblind modes | Protanopia, deuteranopia and tritanopia presets that recolour UI and effects | Reported; unconfirmed for global |
| High contrast | Thicker text outlines and brighter interface indicators | Reported; unconfirmed for global |
| Reduced motion | Cuts screen shake, particles and camera animation | Reported; unconfirmed for global |
| Subtitles | Dialogue and system-message captions with size and opacity options | Reported; unconfirmed for global |
| FPS cap | 30, 60, 120 or uncapped | Reported; conflicts with the Scale Test observation above |
Every row comes from one secondary guide, AION2KINA’s accessibility write-up, and none of it appears in NCSOFT’s global materials. The FPS-cap row is the one to distrust most: the Launch Scale Test settings menu, as observed by SPACE4GAMES, offered no frame-rate limiter beyond V-Sync, which is the opposite of a 30/60/120 menu. A single secondary list is not enough to plan around, and the honest position is that no accessibility feature is confirmed for the global build until the client shows it.
Is AION 2 a PC-and-mobile game?
The global AION 2 release is PC-only, but the game is not PC-only by design. The Korean and Taiwanese service has run on PC and mobile since November 2025, and a community wiki notes the game was built PC-first with a mobile port and a separate mobile UI/UX. The global build is “developed exclusively for PC platforms.”
That background explains the controller question. A mobile client is built around touch and virtual sticks, so the same combat that runs on a phone maps cleanly onto a gamepad, and a PC-and-mobile codebase is more likely to treat controller input as a first-class path than a keyboard-only MMO would. Fextralife’s Controls page, written in the KR/TW era, also records that the game has no auto-combat and is designed for manual, skill-based control — which is why a pad and a mouse are both plausible ways to play rather than one being an afterthought. None of that promises full controller support for the global build; it only explains why “playable with a controller” is a low bar for this game to clear.
Does AION 2 work on the Steam Deck?
Nothing official currently supports handheld play. Steam flags AION 2’s AppID 3393110 as windows true, mac false, linux false, and both official requirement tiers are written for 64-bit Windows 10 or 11. The Steam Deck runs Linux, and Valve has published no compatibility rating for AION 2 — so there is no verified Deck status in any direction: not Verified, not Playable, not Unsupported.
Community reports are mixed and predate the global build. On r/Aion2, one thread from the KR/TW era said the game accepted gamepad input mainly when played through a streaming service, while another reported being able to play on the Deck at all. Those are contradictory, both are unverified, and neither is a measurement of the global client. The honest position is that Deck play means running a Windows-only game through Proton, which NCSOFT has not commented on and Valve has not rated. If you are buying hardware for AION 2, buy for a Windows PC, and treat handheld play as a project rather than a supported feature. The release schedule is where a change to any of this would surface first.
What NC has not guaranteed
| Question | Status |
|---|---|
| A controller is playable at launch | Confirmed — NCSOFT pre-release FAQ |
| Full controller support across all menus and UI | Not guaranteed — “still being evaluated” |
| A list of screens that still need mouse and keyboard | Not published |
| An official button map for the global build | Not published |
| UI scaling and accessibility features | Not published by NCSOFT for global — only secondary coverage |
| A Steam Deck compatibility rating | Not published |
| A console version with a date | Not announced — being prepared, no date |
| A global mobile version | Not planned — global is “developed exclusively for PC platforms” |
Two clarifications keep this table honest. First, media coverage that says controller support is “confirmed” is correct about the playable half and has sometimes stretched it into “full gamepad support at launch,” which is more than NCSOFT’s own wording promises. Second, the absence of a Steam controller category is not proof that pads fail — it means NCSOFT has not claimed a support tier, so a buyer has nothing official to rely on. Both gaps close the same way: with the live build on October 5, not with a pre-launch guess.

Evidence level: Official for the FAQ wording, the Gamescom statement and every Steam field; KR/TW reference or community-reported for mapping, setup and handheld behaviour. The distinction matters here more than on most pages, because the global build has no published controller documentation of its own. No claim of full controller support or Steam Deck verification is made, because neither has been established by NCSOFT or Valve; items marked not published or not announced were checked against the sources above on September 24, 2026.
