AION 2 Common Errors and How to Fix Them

FAQ

Is AION 2 down right now?
Not as of October 6, 2026. The only scheduled downtime was announced in advance: eight hours from October 4 at 22:00 PDT (October 5 at 07:00 CEST), with the game login unavailable throughout and players disconnected when it began, per NCSOFT's own maintenance notice. The launch went live on time at 13:00 UTC on October 5, and no hot fix, extension or emergency window has been published on the official Steam feed since. Steam's player-count API returned 257,391 concurrent players at 02:39 UTC on October 6.
What does Error Code 1000 mean in AION 2?
Unconfirmed — NCSOFT has published no table mapping its error numbers to meanings. The string players actually post is a payment failure, not a login failure: "Payment failed. The requested operation could not be performed. Please try again later. (Error code: 1000)", seen in the PURPLE in-game checkout. Read the screen around the code before doing anything else — at payment it is a payment-region or payment-method problem, not a server outage or a broken client, and reinstalling will never clear it.
How do I fix "cannot connect to login server" in AION 2?
Work in this order: check whether an official notice explains it — maintenance and launch notices live on the AION 2 Steam feed, and NCSOFT publishes no separate status page — then confirm you are on the storefront you bought on, since Steam accounts play on Steam and PURPLE accounts on PURPLE. After that, fully exit and reopen the launcher, verify game files, and only then look at VPN, firewall or routing software. A queue with a position number is not this error: a queue means the server is healthy and full.
Why do I get "DirectX 12 is not supported on your system"?
The client runs a DirectX 12 capability check and rejects your setup. Steam lists DirectX Version 12 in both the minimum and recommended tiers with no documented DirectX 11 path, and AION 2 is an Unreal Engine 5 title. A Steam discussion thread opened at launch carries the exact message with four comments and no official reply; one reply reports being blocked by an AMD driver prompt and clearing it after installing the latest driver. Update the graphics driver first and leave your launch options empty — the suggested -dx12 workaround is not an NC-documented fix.
Why does AION 2 crash or show a black screen?
Player-posted logs show Unhandled Exception: EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION with AION2.exe and VCRUNTIME140.dll in the stack, and NC has published no root cause for it. Note that one crash thread was filed from a Ryzen 7 9800X3D with an RTX 5070 Ti, so this is not only a low-spec problem. The practical order is verify files, update the driver, disable overlays plus frame generation and variable refresh, keep free disk space above the official 100 GB, and drop the graphics preset — NC's own sheet asks for Very Low at 1080p on minimum hardware.
What is the difference between an AION 2 queue and an error?
A queue with a position number means the servers are up and overloaded, so it is working as designed — leave it alone. An error with no queue and no world list means the login service is refusing you, which is the shape that needs triage. NCSOFT's own launch-week advice for players stuck queuing on a full server was to create a character on a recommended server instead, since server transfers did not open until October 14.

The most common aion 2 error on launch day is not a broken install — it is the server refusing a login, and the two look identical until you know which side produced them. The global launch on October 5, 2026 behaved exactly as the release date and launch time guide predicted: an eight-hour scheduled maintenance with login unavailable, then queues and login errors in the first hours after the doors opened. Read the two sides apart first, then repair only your own machine.

What AION 2 launch day actually looked like

The downtime was announced, scheduled and on time. NCSOFT’s maintenance notice, titled “Scheduled Maintenance Sun Oct 4 / Mon Oct 5” and posted to the official Steam feed, states that game login would be “temporarily unavailable” for 8 hours from October 4 at 22:00 PDT (October 5 at 07:00 CEST), lists game servers as the affected service, and warns that players would be disconnected once maintenance began. The same notice carried the Advanced Access to commercial launch switch plus quality-of-life changes: the character deletion wait shortened from 168 hours to 24 hours and the minimum level dropped from Level 10 to Level 1, the idle redirect to the server selection screen stretched from 30 minutes to 3 hours, and boss stats adjusted.

The doors opened on schedule. The feed carries “AION 2 Will Launch On Time” at 12:48 UTC on October 5 and “Launch Into AION 2 Now!” at 13:00 UTC. Population followed immediately — “Thank you for 400.000 Active Players” at 14:04 UTC with a bound gift, and a second bound gift, a Customization Voucher, at 19:02 UTC. SteamDB’s own post in the same feed records a peak of 397,905 concurrent players on October 5.

As of October 6, 2026 there is no outage notice. Nothing on the official Steam feed since launch announces a hot fix, an extension or an emergency window; the most recent official posts are the two thank-you gifts and a giveaway. Steam’s player-count API returned 257,391 concurrent players at 02:39 UTC on October 6. The server status and maintenance page tracks the notice history; the server population page covers what a full world looks like from the inside.

Server-side causes: the login refused you

These four produce an error that no amount of local repair will fix, and three of them are on the record for launch day.

Cause What it looks like What is actually on the record
Scheduled maintenance Login unavailable, client cannot reach the world list, kicked at the start of the window The October 5 window ran the full 8 hours and closed at the published 13:00 UTC launch time
Capacity / full world Queue with a position number, or “servers are full” at character select 400,000 active users reported by NCSOFT hours after launch. NC’s launch-week notice advised players queued on a full server to create a character on a recommended server instead — transfers did not open until October 14
Regional or storefront mismatch Login fails, or characters are missing at character select Entitlement is tied to the storefront: Steam accounts play on Steam, PURPLE accounts on PURPLE. The server list and regions page covers the roster
Stale Playtest build still installed Grey Play button, or an old build refusing new servers NC’s September 19 scale-test closing post requires removing the separate Playtest app (AppID 4972320) before the retail client; the Advance Access guide has the step

A queue is the healthy shape: the server is up and full. An error with no queue and no world list is the unhealthy shape. That single distinction decides whether you repair your PC or wait.

Local-side causes: five checks before you reinstall

Everything on this side is reversible and cheap. Do them in order, because each one invalidates the next if you skip it.

  1. Verify the game files. Steam: right-click AION 2 → Properties → Installed Files → Verify integrity. The launch patch was large, and an interrupted pre-download is the most common source of a client that updates and then fails to start. Full pre-download mechanics are on the preload and download page.
  2. Clear the launcher cache and restart the client completely. Exit the launcher from the tray, not by closing the window, then relaunch and log in again — the same discipline Steam itself requires when it has not reloaded an update.
  3. Update the graphics driver. AION 2 runs on Unreal Engine 5 and Steam lists DirectX Version 12 in both requirement tiers, so the driver is load-bearing. The official tier targets are on the PC system requirements page.
  4. Check your region selector. Picking a world or region you cannot actually log into produces a login error that looks identical to an outage.
  5. Free disk space. The official sheet asks for 100 GB available space and marks an SSD recommended. A drive that fills mid-patch produces update loops that read exactly like a “temporary error”.

Reinstalling is the last step, not the first. Nothing on this list requires it.

AION 2 error message, cause and fix

What you see Most likely cause What to do
Launcher stuck on “Loading” or “Preparing” Update still unpacking, or a stalled patch from an interrupted download Let it finish. If it holds past a few minutes, verify files, then kill the launcher from the tray so no stale process holds a lock, and reopen it
“Cannot connect to login server” / “Unable to connect to login server” Server-side refusal — maintenance, capacity, or a region/storefront mismatch Look for a notice naming your world on the Steam feed; confirm the storefront you bought on; then try another world. With no notice and no queue, treat it as local or routing and continue down the local list
“A temporary error has occurred. Please try again later.” Auth service rejecting the session; player reports attach the code 40309:500 to it, which NC has never defined Retry on a schedule rather than in a loop, and confirm free disk space and verified files first. Note whether it hits during maintenance, at login, or inside a busy world — that context separates a server refusal from a client fault
“Please Try Again Later” in the chat box An official known issue, listed by NCSOFT and resolved by changing character, passing through a loading screen, or logging back in Do exactly that. This is a chat-layer bug with an NC-published workaround, not a login failure
“Payment failed… Please try again later. (Error code: 1000)” Unconfirmed. The code appears in the PURPLE checkout; one community answer attributes it to a non-served payment region Identify the screen first. At payment it is a payment-region or payment-method problem, not a server fault — reinstalling will not clear it
“DirectX 12 is not supported on your system. Try running without the -dx12 or -d3d12 command line argument.” A DX12 capability check the client rejects. Steam requires DX12 in both tiers, with no documented DX11 path Update the driver and relaunch; leave launch options empty. NC has posted no fix, so any DX11 workaround is unconfirmed until documented
Brief black screen, then the game closes or never appears Unconfirmed. A black screen before crashing is reported by some players, but NC attributes it to nothing Verify files, update the driver, drop the graphics preset, and disable overlays. NC’s own sheet asks for Very Low at 1080p on minimum hardware
“UE-AION2: Fatal Error” or “Game has crashed and will close” Engine-level crash with no published root cause Capture the full log, verify files, update drivers, and post it in the official Discord bug channel listed on the Discord and communities page
Unhandled Exception: EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION, or crashing every one to two hours No official root cause. Posted logs show the exception inside AION2.exe with VCRUNTIME140.dll in the stack Same order as above. Note this was posted from a Ryzen 7 9800X3D with an RTX 5070 Ti, so high-end hardware does not exclude it — the crash is not simply a low-spec problem

Error codes NCSOFT has not explained

There is no published code table, so any confident mapping you find is someone’s guess. NC’s AION 2 Global support FAQ points you at the right procedure instead: its block-code entry at help.plaync.com/faq/aion2global?faqNo=7154, dated September 10, 2026, tells you to search the code on screen, apply the listed solution, and submit an inquiry if that does not resolve it.

Code Status How to check
1000 Unconfirmed — no NC definition; appears attached to a payment failure in the PURPLE checkout Confirm you are on the payment screen, not the login screen. Payment-region problems do not clear through file verification or reinstall
40309:500 (after “a temporary error has occurred”) Unconfirmed — the string is player-reported; the suffix is not explained by NC Record whether it appears during maintenance, at login, or in a busy world, and include that context with any support ticket
Any code on the “block code” pop-up Officially supported Follow NC’s own procedure: search the code on the block-code page, apply the listed fix, then submit an inquiry
